Portable electronic communication keyboards are used by students who have developed decoding and encoding skills, but struggle with verbal expression. Sometimes these individuals are completely nonverbal, or, it is posisble that they are part time AAC users. The student might struggle to make complex ideas known verbally, or, might have a condition such as selective mutism, whereby they are unable to speek under certain conditions.
