The Investigation Process - Coggle Diagram

- - - - The police arrive on scene, setting up tape and covering up the deceased body. Homicide detective Jim Gordon and commissioner of the narcotics unit, Hank Schrader arrive on the scene due to the nature of the crime.
      - Depending on the nature of the crime, the first responders may carry out the procedure differently. In the case of a homicide, police will call for the forensic units, homicide team and detectives. usually the preservation of evidence is prioritized as well as medical assistance. After the crime scene is secured, the police and detectives will start to take statements from the witness and other people in the area who might retain knowledge regarding the crime.
      - Preliminary Investigation
        
        Detective Gordon and his team were able to gather many interviews from the homeless encampment near the crime scene. They were all very compliant when asked basic questions regarding the crime, however; when asked if they knew who did it, they all dismissed it. This reluctance to answer the "who did it" led Detective Gordon to believe it was someone with lots of power. Meanwhile, Officer Schrader noticed the copious amounts of the popular street drug, "Blue Sky" within the homeless encampment as well as near the deceased body.
        
        During the preliminary investigation, the initial information is gathered and accessed by officers back at the precinct. More witness will be interviewed and any immediate evidence such as bullet casings, drugs, etc is also collected. The main objective is gather a basic understanding for police to build the case off of. Around this time, the forensics team will have able to gather substantial evidence like tire marks, blood, and fingerprints.
        
        The forensics team will take the evidence back to their lab to further test and analyze blood, fingerprints and drugs so they can identify any potential witness from the DNA. Usually this process will take a while, so in the mean time, this is when police start to build more upon their report.
        
        Crime Scene Investigation
        
        Hank Schrader and his team have confirmed that the drugs were in fact, "Blue Sky" meth. These drugs only come from Jessie Heisenberg, a high profile drug dealer who Hank and his team have been following for years. Furthermore, thanks to the extensive research from Detective Gordons homicide team, they were able to trace a credit card which the bullet casings were bought with to someone who resides at the address, 308 Negra Arroyo lane, which also happens to be the suspected address of Jessie Hesienberg infamous meth lab.
        
        Identification of Suspects
        
        After multiple statements from witness's, forensic evidence, and other pieces evidence gathered by police, they will start to create a list of possible suspects.
        
        Forensic evidence found from the bullet casings in conjunction with the drugs found at the crime scene have led Detective Gordon and Commissioner Schrader to believe that Jessie Heisenberg is their #1 suspect.
        
        Search Warrants
        
        Detective Gordon and commissioner Schrader both submit warrants to a judge, one for Jessie's arrest and the other for a search of his house. These warrants are based off the initial and forensic evidence at the crime scene and statements from witness's.
        
        In order to confirm policies suspicions or gather more evidence, police will conduct a search of someone house or belongings. However, this involves police writing a reason for a search warrant and submitting it to a judge for them to approve, as well as probable cause.. The writing and approval of a warrant can take anywhere from 4 hours to 3 days to even weeks and months. However police do not need a warrant for your arrest and warrants can be served at any time including the morning or night as long as the suspect is confirmed at the location
        
        Arrest
        
        At around 9 am, police bust into Jessies home with a battering ram, S.W.A.T. team and K9 unit as he is considered a dangerous individual. Upon entry, Jessie try's to jump out his 2nd story window to evade arrest but is caught up to by the K9 unit. He is read his rights before being placed in the police van in handcuffs.
        
        After a sufficient amount of evidence is compiled, the suspect is identified and the warrants are approved. Police are clear to go into the suspects house and arrest him upon entry. In some cases the arrest will happen at the scene of crime, or after a more thorough investigation. When being arrested police will read out your rights as they place you in handcuffs and they must state the reason for your arrest.
