SPS 206 Genocide and Human Rights.
Identify key actors in the creation of the UDHR
People Like Eleanor Roosevelt and their influence on countries on the human rights commission played a key role in drafting the UDHR and pushing the rights of all peoples across the world.
a lot of key actors influenced the growth of new systems and treaties at later dates.
Using history in future studies is important so i will continue this in my grad school.
Apply human rights theory and practice learned in the course to a specific research topic on human rights
I have been researching human rights violations to women and children during the Bosnian genocide. The Serbians attack on the muslim population of Bosnia and the rape they perpetrated towards women and young females was some of the biggest human rights violations to happen in a post soviet Europe.
the key actors were great thinkers of human rights theory and help create treaties for the future.
learning these theories helps with future research I will be doing.
Assess when human rights are universal
Human rights are universal when they revolve around basic needs like food and water. They are also universal when people want to partake in political systems.
a lot of specific rights are universal rights that must be protected.
reading documents and learning my rights is important for future voting.
Identify the legal documents that hold states accountable for implementing human rights
there are many conventions and treaties giving more specific details on what rules to follow to provide everyone human rights. The 1989 children's convention gave children around the world better protections.
these legal documents try to asses the violations around the globe and this can help asses these issues.
this goes hand in hand with identifying treaties for my future.
Identify additional treaties at the regional level that protect human rights
I looked at the Inter American system that protects human rights around the western hemisphere. Most if not all of the countries between both Americas are on the council and take part in protecting human rights.
these systems are more specific to larger frameworks like the children's convention.
being able to read treaties and understand the rights i am given will help me understand what my role is in civil society.
Analyze specific rights, like the right to life or self-determination, and assess what they might mean in different contexts
The right to a fair and public hearing I think is important as being judged by your peers or people alike you is incredibly important in the right to a fair trial. Being able to keep law safe is important.
goes with the UDHR and these rights outlined are supposed to be universal.
this also goes with the universal learning objective and learning about my rights will help influence my vote.
Assess specific human rights violations and challenges associated with poverty.
Rural access to water in most Subsaharan African states has become one of the biggest human violations directly related to poverty. This basic right to water is sometimes one of the hardest things to provide due to disease and contaminated water.
Violations come up when people don't believe human rights are universal.
knowing how to asses violations and help stop them from repeating in the future.
