LO4: Create and evaluate pre-production documents for a new media product
Proposals, project outlines and treatment documents
Proposal
Written formal plan produced for others to assess the validity of a project
Could be word processed document sent to client or presentation delivered directly as a pitch
Purpose is to 'sell' idea
Can have a 'high concept document' that summarises the project on 1 page
Usually include data about proposed target audience, explain solution, outline of resources and potential costs/budgets
Project outline
Initial document given to various members of production team to provide them with enough details about the project
Include details of narrative, resource requirements, budget limitation and timeline of production
Treatment
Goes into more depth that outline document and sets out project in detail
Production team can use it as a reference point so they are cleat about how project will develop
Also a starting point for other documents such as storyboards, scripts and shooting scripts
Can be shown to client and potential investors so that they are given clear understanding of what final project will look like
Production schedule
Timetable that allocates resources and processes to a project
Start with final deadline and work backwards, allocating tasks, resources, contingencies and time to various aspects of project
Contingency - back up of resources such as extra time in case something goes wrong
Use of deadlines helps to reduce costs as resources can be booked for specific timescales only
Milestones - smaller checkpoint built into tasks to track performance against a deadline
Should include:
Details of original proposal
Key dates agreed with client
Details of locations and any transport
Details of resources, personnel, props and equipment
Complete details of all personnel involved
Call sheet
Ensures everyone knows what is happening and what their role is
Location details, crew details, health and safety, transport schedule, filming schedule, equipment, facilities, contingencies
SWOT analysis
Produced during early stages of production to analyse which ideas are viable for a project
Identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to avoid any potential problems
Asset log
List of all resources used during media production
Used to check any legal issues that could arise from their use, such as copyright and permissions
Includes title of the asset together with reason for its use along with its ownership and details of any permissions required and gained
Risk assessment (site/location recce)
Visit to location before filming or recording to check its suitability
Check camera angles
Check lighting
Check acoustic and sound
Viability and health and safety issues
Photos can be taken too

Storyboard
Visual plan of a media production that allows production team to see clearly ow a product will look and how scnes will work together
Given to production team and crew so then can create final product
Should include:
Images/sketches
Descriptions in each scene
Scene numbers and direction arrows
Timings/durations
LIghting
Music and sound effects
Location
Camera movement and angles
Annotations
Script
Document given to members of production for a radio advert of TV/film scene to crew know what locations and shots are expected so all characters know what to say
Should include:
Dialogue
Charecter names
Locations
Expressions
Actiosn and movements
Camera shots
SLug lines
Time of each scene
Concept art
Used to convey an idea during planning stage in a media production. Illustrations of fantasy characters etc
Flat plan/wireframe
2D representation of how all articles and adverts are laid out on a page and how the elements on the page of screen fit together. Allows designer to see if proportion's are correct and all elements included
Prototype
An early model of a media product which allows testing of early concept to be carried out to ensure it will meet its needs
Visualisation diagram
Rough diagram or sketch of a plan for layout of a project
Used to check what is being produced will work and objectives can be met
Include: contents, title, logo, fonts, colours, sizes and label everything
Page mock-up
Similar to flat plans and wireframes it contains more details such as content and colour schemes. Shown to clients and audiences to gain feedback before final version creates. New software allows creation of interactive media products
Set design
Creation of documents that set out how a scene for a TV or film location is set up. Can be 2D or 3D and used to show filming team how the scene looks so that camera angles and movement scan be planned. Also show production team what needs to be built
