-
section two: address wider debate and texts and differences, where do the texts sit in the debate?
section three: outline approach, criteria and indicate own view
-
core texts:
Pollard: Mary's reign was a failure overall, Philip of Spain incompetent and the Spanish marriage was ultimately a mistake. English society was 'disloyal' and 'disheartened'. Focuses on war, disease, famine
Elton: argues that strong foundations built under Henry VIII were dismissed throughout the following period. Period categorised by governmental failings. He argues the devastating effects of war and mishandling of foreign policy, the religious unrest and increasing anxiety of the English population during the period as well as political upheaval all constitute a crisis.
Matusiak: 'sense of crisis', traditional arguments are based on a 'blunder' of evidence but one cannot be too quick to reject the traditional viewpoint
criteria (texts): range of evidence covered- balanced?, criteria, timeframe
supplementary texts:
Tittler: sympathetic towards Mary, able to establish her own initiatives but these were not necessarily successful. Argues many of the successes of the Marian reign have been wrongfully credited to Elizabeth. However, also argues that that the end of the reign was caracterised by a "host of setbacks"
Hoak: focuses mainly on the 'good duke, evild duke' debate, emphasises the achievements of northumberland and dismisses the 'evil' reputation painted by previous historians. Hoak criticises Somerset's overall incompetence when dealing with domestic and foreign policy.
criteria (crisis): competency/efficiency of government, state/popular attittude of poor/general society during period (loyal/disloyal), effectiveness of mary/edward as monarchs.
