Ionic Bonds

Description: Ionic bonding is a form of chemical connection in which one atom loses valence electrons and gains them from another.

Examples-of-Ionic-Compounds

NaF, sodium fluoride

NaHCO3, sodium bicarbonate

NaCl, sodium chloride

Na2CO3, sodium carbonate

Applications

Properties

A crystal lattice structure

Conduct electricity in a molten stae

High Melting Point

Conduct electricity in liquid state but not in solid

High Boiling Point

In solid state they are good insulators

They're hard and brittle

Salt or NaCl the most common ionic compound is used in many of our daily meals even as we tend to overlook its usefulness.

The fluoride in fluoride toothpaste is the result of sodium fluoride, NaF.

Many antiperspirants contain calcium chloride, CaCl2. Calcium chloride is also used on the roads in cold climates to lower the freezing point of water.

Rust is the result of Iron reacting with Oxygen to produce the Ionic compound Iron(|||) oxide.
