-> Phase 1 - screening for safety; how much can be tolerated, healthy paid volunteers, begins with small doses and then increases - any adverse reactions stops testing
-> Phase 2 - establishing testing protocol - conditions under which final test will show clear results; which doses are therapeutically effective, what benefits occur and which patients are helped by it - volunteers with target disorder, usually have placebo control groups and usually double blind
-> Phase 3 - final testing - double blind, placebo control on large numbers of patients suffering the disorder - based on phase 2 so any test will produce therapeutic effects - first test is not conclusive but if promising, they hold a second test on a redesigned protocol; two independent successful tests are required to allow general public distribution
