The Digestive System
5 Stages of Nutrition
- Ingestion - taking food into the mouth
- Digestion - breaking food down
- Absorption - food molecules pass through the small intestine walls into the blood
- Assimilation - Body cells take in food molecules
- Egestion - undigested food is passed out of the body
How long it takes
- It takes about 6 to 8 hours for food to pass through stomach + small intestine.
- Food then enters large intestine(colon) for further digestion, absorption of water + elimination of undigested food.
- It takes about 36 hours for food to move through the entire colon.
-
After food is swallowed its pushed down the eosophagus by peristalsis (muscular action) + enters the stomach.

Once food has passed through the bowel, the waste moves to the rectum which stretches, triggering a message to the brain to say that the rectum is full and needs to be emptied
