What was the Spanish Inquisition?
The Spanish Inquisition was operated independently from the Papal Inquisition and was cruel in the quest to unite Spain under Christianity at times.
What are its origins?
The Inquisition originated in the Albigensian Heresy, which rejected any authority and advocated violence and suicide, prompted Pope Innocent III to call for its purging
The persistence of such heresy led to capital punishment, including burning heretics at the stake, and the establishment of the official inquisition in 1231.

The two orders that were placed in charge of the Inquisition were the Franciscans and the Dominicans

The initial target of the Inquisition was the Albigensians in Southern France
Inquisitors
Dominicans and Franciscans were asked to serve as independent inquisitional judges due to superb theological and spiritual formation
This was a difficult task, and the Church sought men of virtue for this role, including a select few who have since been named Saints.
What were the processes for inquisition?
The first step included the inquisitor offering a “term of grace” and mild penances for the inhabitants
The second step would be the confinement or friendly persuasion of those who still claimed innocent. Several witnesses were needed to convict an alleged criminal
The third step was the advisory of independent parties, also known as “boni viri”
Results of an Inquisition
The results would be announced at a solemn ceremony, and punishments were meted out
Most punishments simply called for the performance of good works, but occasionally heretics were imprisoned or handed to the civil authorities to be executed
