- - - - STRENGTH - support from national swedish adoption study - found that in adults that had been adpoted, from their biological families with at least 1 addict in, these children were more likely to end up with an addiction. compared to adopted children with no biological family addicts
  - - - WEAKNESS - issue of causation. studies have shown that there is a correlation between addiction and stress. however this doesnt mean stress is the risk factor. no direction of causality as addiction could be causing stress.
  - - - STRENGTH - research support. study found that there was a strong postitive correlation between parents' use of cannabis and their childs use of it.

        support for the link between addiction and apd. several studies show addiction and apd are co-morbid. 55 alcohol dependant people, of which 18 had apd. for these 18 it was on average that they developed apd 4 years before addiction.

      - NEGATIVE - not present for all addictions, so cant be generalised, more prevelant in younger ages

        broadly speaking the symptoms are often oppostite to what the substance gives, for example stress from quitting smoking
