- - - - modernity in econ and politics - political and social understanding of the "modern" period (debated period but cud be start of bourgeois or french rev to like mid - late 20th century) - highlights the idea of progress (re. constant change)
        
        eg. believes science > religion to find the "truth"
      - modernism in art, culture, and sensibility - questions "progress" and "truth" (concepts set up by the rich during the modern period)
        
        questions the existence of one objective "truth" that explains everything
- - - - and just to make life difficult, a conflict/struggle within what the author thinks the struggle between the bourgeois and proletariat is i think??? - marx's solid vs melting visions of life
        
        in the first section of the manifesto, marx described the solid institutional core of modernity + process of modernisation
        
        emergence of world market - destroys local markets bc creates insatiable demand - globalisation basically - thus advanced communication is developed - wealth concentrated in few people - overnight mass migration to cities - centralised powerful states to control ppl - but real power lies elsewhere - results in revolution
        
        all this is still happening
        
        so we're reading all this and its intense - by the time we get to the proletarians the world has already melted, manipulated by the rich and powerful
    - - hates the bourgeois but literally praises tf out of them bc vita activa
        
        also notes the irony that the extent of the possibilities/the potential of the creations of the bourgeois can only be realised by breaking its power - i.e. the proletariats, all they care abt in the end is profit
        
        the bourgeois created a whole realm of possibilities and development through social labour but are limited by their profit driven mentality. marx says that the proletariats that dare to strive beyond these developments will overthrow the bourgeois using means of production created by the bourgeois
      - 2nd praise is that they are compelled to revolutionise constantly due to local and global competition
        
        bourgeoisie will constantly revolutionise, change, agitate, etc etc due to intense competitive pressure - the production chain (?) - thus nothing is ever constant - thus people are constantly looking for meaning - thus they consume to find meaning - this benefits the bourgeois
        
        all that is solid melts into air means that we are deliberately forced to not see the chain of production so that we produce and consume constantly without ever thinking why or what any of it means
    - - promotes self development and marx loves this - the personality type that emerges from the bourgeois mentality
        
        however people will only end up developing "profitable" traits, rest is never recognised let alone fostered
        
        as a result, the bourgeois class will self destruct as this is not a sustainable way of development or life
