Trial by cold water
The accused was lowered into a river or pond close to the church with a rope tied + knotted above the wrist
If the person sank + the knot went below the surface the accused was innocent because the pure water had accepted them
People believed water was pure + would reveal the truth
If they sank + the knot remained above the surface they were gilty because the pure water had rejected them
Usually taken by men
Trial by hot water
The accused had to lift an object out of boiling water
The arm was then bandaged + unwrapped 3 days later
Usually taken by men
If the hand was healing well everyone would know God had judged them innocent
If the wound wasn't healing cleanly, God was demonstrating there gilt
Trial by Consecrated bread
The Priest had to pray + eat a piece of blessed bread
If he chocked he was gilty because God wouldn't let a sinner eat consecrated bread
Taken by Priests
People believed that God would always punish a lying Priest
Trial by hot iron
The hand was bandaged + unwrapped 3 days later
If the wound was healing well everyone would know God was proving there innocence
The accused has to carry a hot iron for 3 metres
If the wound wasn't healing cleanly, God was demonstrating there gilt
