Analyze definitions and the theoretical/historical foundations of human rights;
I learned about how different cultures have different definitions for what it means to be a human right. This is why the UDHR was so difficult to accomplish and is the reason why some nations don't ratify all of the Human RIghts treaties passed by the UN.
I will use what I learned in my future career by understanding that everyone has a different perspective and that informs how they think and act.
Identify the various organizations involved in promoting human rights worldwide
I believe that I have learned how the different branches of the UN interact to create treaties and how the ratification process works. I wasn't aware of how many branches of the UN were involved in the Human RIghts process.
I will use how a larger bureaucracy goes about implementing policy in my future career as I might want to work at a large government agency
Identify the challenges associated with understanding, interpreting, and implementing human rights
I learned that challenges to understanding and interpreting Human Rights include the challenge of cultural diversity across the world. Some aspects to a cultural identity prevent certain nations from protecting certain human rights. Thus, creating a universal right may be tricky.
I will use this in my future career by understanding that just because a culture perpetuates the same idea or thing, doesn't necessarily mean that it is correct. For example, some cultures denied universal rights
Assess how the Holocaust genocide that occurred during WWII inspired world leaders to create the UDHR
I learned that the UDHR was created in direct response to the events of WW2 and eventually inspired the idea of Responsibility to Protect, which is a doctrine created by the Canadian delegation that the United Nations has a responsibility to uphold the human rights of people across the world and not necessarily within their own borders.
I will use this knowledge in my future career by understanding that the world is becoming more and more globalized and that something that happens across the world can have a tremendous impact on me.
Apply human rights theory and practice learned in the course to a specific research topic on human rights
I was able to apply human rights theory and practice to the issue of immigration through a final research paper submitted at the end of the semester.
This will help me in my future career by using planning and organizing skills in order to complete a large project
Identify and assess how regional human rights organizations protect human rights
I learned that the United Nations created the United Nations Human Rights Council which operates through four main branches to protect human rights. One of which calls for each member nation to undergo a peer review of human rights every four and a half years.
This will help in my future career by giving me an understanding of how bureaucracies like IGOS operate in conjunction with other entities such as nations
Assess specific human rights violations and challenges associated with poverty.
I learned that poverty leads to more human rights violations while alos being one in itself. For example, those in poverty have difficulty finding good healthcare or treatment when they are sick, access to water and good housing, etc. It's a state that compounds itself into more problems.
This will help me in my future career by providing the background that not everybody is doing as well as they let on and that sometimes you may not know the challenges someone may face in his or her life.
