LIFE ISSUES
War and Peace
-
Pacifist theory supports that all christians should turn the other cheek, based on Christ's teachings. Does this also apply to self-defense?
-
War is often commanded by God in the OT. These commands are unique and not repeatable, but often displayed God's power through miracles
In NT, turning the other cheek doesn't typically mean an act of violence, it means an act of insult.
Ultimately, our hope is in God.
Abortion and Infanticide
-
-
-
Scripture supports life of the unborn in Exodus 21, Psalm 139, and in multiple passages that describe conception and fetal interactions of John the Baptist and Jesus in Luke
Women seeking abortions are often vulnerable and desperate, and in many cases, are the second victim of abortions
Murder, Killing, and Racism
Jesus did not necessarily mean that all hateful, sinful acts are as evil as murder.
-
-
Self-defense
Validated, especially when it comes to threat of physical harm, but not commanded, especially when it comes to material possession
-
Racism
There is corporate responsibility, and a large group of people can resign to the same ideas, for better or worse
-
There are issues with African-American racism, and the victim mentality that shapes the way that many people approach it with
Biblically, racism is based more on social/cultural/ethnic practices and less on physical characteristics
Paul condemns cultural discrimination, and calls unity to cultures as one under Christ
Deeply rooted in pride, and influenced by ignorance and fear
The church has a responsibility to help correct these attitudes through teaching, relationships, diverse programming and structure
-
Suicide, Ethanasia, and medicine
Suicide is a sin, but questions arise to how serious it is, because it is harm to your own body, not enforced on another
For this same reason, suicide is not treated as a crime. However, assisted suicide does involve intentionally hurting another person, same as murder and can be justifiably illegal.
-
When it comes to euthanasia, we have a responsibility to care even when there is no cure
Hippocratic oath says that nobody can take a human life, even if asked. This matches God's moral standard.
Wthdrawing medical support so natural death can occur in the body is not the same as giving an ill person drugs that will kill them, because the person already had the death process beginning in their body.
-
We are designed to be burdens. This is the purpose and point of Christ and does not diminish anyone's value
