Definiton
The main point of the essay is to know how two texts or items are similar or different. The compare and contrast essay can be used to compare a variety of texts, topics, opinions, theories, books or even people.
Main Characteristics
-Analyze and discuss a certain topic so we can compare it, contrast it, or even both, compare and contrast the topic.
-It can be used to know which thing is better, if we compare private schools and public schools, we can know which one has more advantages.
-It can be used to organize ideas about certain topics and we would be able to explain the topic better.
Types of organization
There are two types of organization.
Block Method.
It shows all the discussion related to A, then compares or contrasts them to the discussions related to B.
Point 1 about A
Point 2 about A
Point 1 about B (with discussion about connections to A).
Point 2 about B (with discussion about connections to A).

Point by point Method.
It alternates the discussion between two items. (A and B), the ones we compare or contrast.
Point 1- analyze A
Point 1- analyze B
Analyzes the topics between A and B.
Point 2- analyze A
Point 2- analyze B
Analyzes the topics between A and B.
Structure
Introduction and thesis statement:
-We write the items to be compared or contrasted.
-We also write the reason why we are comparing it.
-Finally, we write the main points of the items.
The body paragraph where we put the comparisons and contrasts that we are discussing. (using the point-by-point method or the block method).
Conclusion: We summarize everything that was discussed, restate the main points, and write which item compared we prefer.
