Imagery
Example from poem
“Stared in the mirror, svelter, slimmer ”
She stand in front of the mirror, and svelter and slimmer are what she saw from the mirror about her figure
“Wind blew her away”
That’s a sense of feeling to highlight her thinness
“Hearing the avalanche munch of food, then it was carrots, peas, courgettes, potatoes, gravy and meat”
She heard the sound, the poem clearly showed us the word “hearing”, that’s a part of sense of sounds
“Head splitting, mouth dry, hungry and cold”
The adjectives like splitting, dry, hungry and cold are the sense of felling,so that refers to imagery
“She was…chomped and chewed and gorged”
Word ”chomped and chewed”showed the act of the woman
Personification
Example from poem
1.The last apple
aged
in the fruit bowl
“Aged” used for describe a person
2.“She was Anorexia’s true daughter “
We usually use capital letter when the word is a name of people. In this case, the author use capital letter for ‘anorexia’, a noun, a condition. How can a condition has daughter? So the author use personification in this sentence.
“Her skeleton preened under its tight flesh dress”
“Preened” means “cleaned”, which is a verb used for a person
“Left at dawn in a blink, in a wink”
Only a person can wink or blink, so in this quote the author use blink to describe time is part of personification
To emphasize the girl didn’t need eat anything for a long time, to highlight the title “The Diet” (For 1)
To use irony to describe that the girl suffered from anorexia for a high extent. (For 2)
To point out she was so thin that her skeleton even can preened under its tight flesh dress(For 3)
To highlight how thin she is, she can blow by the wind in a blink, even though that’s a bit exaggerate. (For 4)
Parrot
Simile
She stayed near people, / lay in the tent of a nostril like germ, dwelled in the caves of an ear.
As we can see in the sentence, there are a "like", it compared stay near people to stay with germs, so this shows that is a simile. I think this simile want to show the woman is too weak and sick, because her diet was unhealthy.
The diet worked like a dream.
This sentence compared diet to dream, so we can say this sentence use simile. I think author compared these two things together to show that dieting is like a dream, it is not realistic. The dieting cannot help people to be more brautiful, after you dieting you will find out it was like a dream to you, it cannot bring you what you want.
Hyperbole
she was skin and bone
People can not only have the skin and bone left over, although they were very thin. Because author want to emphasize the woman's diet was unhealthy. So that we can know this sentence is hyperbole.
she started to grow smaller - ~ / child-sized, dollsized, the height of a thimble
She sat at her open window and the wind blew her away
Author said the woman sat at the open window and the wind will blow her away. Obviously, people are heavy to be blow away from wind. This sentence use hyperbole to show the woman is too thin, and she still dieting to be thinner.
