Reaction: The BC Ministry of Health and Addiction, in 2023, implemented a discrimination policy. Changing possession of "illegal" drugs such as opioids under 2.5 grams be allowed and those caught for personal usage would not be arrested nor charged. Instead they are given recommendations to treatment centres and related agencies. The reasoning was because following known examples of success such as Portugal, Germany and other countries, Canada hopes to achieve similar successes in this regard, such as lowered overdose rate, lower rates of arrests, removing stigma of drugs and encouraging users and addicts to seek help voluntarily. And pushes for careful monitoring, changes in law enforcement practices, and continuous research to look for more efficient solutions for this crisis.
