Habitants were farmers who lived on seigneuries.

Some habitants neglected their farms because they found the fur trade an easier way to make a living in New France.

In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land, plant crops and build a house

Were large pots of land as grants from the King of France.

Most seigneurs were men from noble families, but women and commoners could also become seigneurs.

The Coureurs worked independantly for themselves.

The government of New France encouraged independent trading. However it made independent trading illegal

Merchants

Many merchants made their living in the fur trade.

They imported goods from France, and traded goods with the Innu, the Ouendat and the Anishinabe.

They bought furs from Coureurs De Bois. Then they shipped the furs to France where they sold them.

Voyageurs

they travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts of great lakes.

The Catholic Church/Clergy

They played an important role in the identity of New France.

In Europe, divisions between catholics and protestants had become deep and bitter.

The church established schools, hospitals and orphanages,
in New France and played an important role in governing the colony
