Deterrence
All punishments were used to hopefully stop other people from committing crime. The punishment were normally quite sever as there was no police they needed to try to stop crime before it happened.
Punishments ranged from - public humiliation, fines or execution.
For many the thought of going to court and having trial by ordeal was enough to stop crimes happening as the Church played such a big part in the community.

Before its introduction the family of the victim were allowed to kill the criminal this was known as blood Feud
The problem with blood feuds was that they lasted for years and carried on violence and hatred between families.
