The workers were encouraged by the government to go on strike- to stop producing coal and other goods so the French could not seize it
The problem was- this meant they did not have enough goods to trade and their economy weakened more
Germany was unable to defend itself due to military restrictions from the Treaty of Versailles

They felt they had no choice but to print more money.
The effects were devastating
They had no money to pay reparations and if the French continued to occupy the Ruhr- trade would grind to a halt and the economy would collapse

1923 - Germans were carrying 2 billion mark notes. This would be like us carrying £2 million notes
1922 - 1 mark notes were popular and common- this was a bit like a £1 note

They did not have enough money to buy fuel or clothes so they may as well use the money instead.
