Postoperative fever, also known as pyrexia, is a common complication that can occur after surgery. It is defined as a body temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher, taken orally, rectally, or in the axilla, in the absence of an identified cause other than the surgical procedure. Postoperative fever can occur within the first 24 hours after surgery and may last for several days.
