MERCHENANT OF VENICE II
ACT 2
SCENE 3
the scene in wich lancelot betrays shylosk is the beginning of the slow following into the spare of shylock as a master as a father and then as a jew
-
When Jessica and Lorenzo talk abt each other there's always syntactically an element of doubt. this relationship is disturbing and unconvìcing
mixed marrige even if she will convert ,conversion is never completely believable there’s always a danger that your old self will reappear
-
SCENE 4
Gratiano, Lorenzo Salarino and Salario are arranging the escape of Jessica from shylock's house
they are very unprepared. The message is that males are again incapable of taking the situation into their own hands
-
SCENE 5
-
Lancelot invites Shylock to dinner with Bassanio.
shylock accepts the invite even if he isn't convinced n tells jessica to lock the house-> DOMESTIC IMPRISONMENT
:musical_note:
characters who don't like music are always somehow evil, music in Shakespeare is a symbol of harmony, characters that don't like music are carriers of disharmony out of sink. He is against fun.
Jessica and Portia are in similar situations: portia’s father is a holy man, shylock is the devil but they are both patriarchal fathers
Portia doesn't rebel or betray his father, she sticks to the rules although she is also a subversive female character.
Jessica ibetrays his father, escaping his house, converting and stealing his money
-
-
SCENE 6
idea that you get tired of your partner is expanded upon just before the moment Lorenzo and jessica are about to begin their love life together.
to greet Lorenzo, Jessica speaks in questions->element of doubt
-
SCENE 7
-
-
Morocco, although he knows the rules of not judging from appearance he is not able to put that into practice
-
-
-
ACT 3
SCENE 1
-
shylock revenge speech
-
-
rhetorical questions
We are so hypnotized by the rhetorical questions that we dont realize when the real question arrives (shall we not revenge?)
-
-
-
-
-
in every Shakespearean play is the heart of the play, turing point
the coupole are formed in act 3 which is unusual because this happy ending should happen at the end. The casket plot is exhausted. The ordeal changed and it’s not over.
-
SCENE 2
-
-
-
-
bassiano's answer is the equivalent of the first part of Portia's speech. Bassiano's last line is spooky because they introduce the idea of dying and death
-
SCENE 3
antonio is in prison
the stylistic rhetorical characteristic of shylock keeps popping up, his obsession with repeting himself and others-> easy english bc english isn't’ his first language
If the duke do not make sure that shylock gets his officer the whole future of venice the entire republic will be in danger, there’s nothing the duke can do
SCENE 4
Lorenzo speaks to Portia again about antonio. Portia keeps hearing how great Antonio is and how dear a lover he is
She is givesLorenzo the keys of Belmont and pretends she is going with Narissa to the monastery to pray and wait for his man but in reality she has already decided that she will go to the trail in Venice crossdressed as a man
casket plot and romance are done with, act 4 and 5 will solve all the issues that are still suspended: shylock’s pound of flesh and the ring.
