What is the disorder characterized by?
Eating unusually large amounts of food in a specific amount of time, such as over a two-hour period
Feeling depressed, disgusted, ashamed, guilty or upset about your eating
Eating even when you're full or not hungry
Frequently eating alone or in secret
Feeling that your eating behavior is out of control
What are the diagnostic criteria for the disorder?
Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty after overeating
Eating much more rapidly than normal
What are five risk factors/risk groups for the disorder?
One of the strongest risk factors for an eating disorder is perfectionism, especially a type of perfectionism called self-oriented perfectionism, which involves setting unrealistically high expectations for yourself.
A history of dieting and other weight-control methods is associated with the development of binge eating.
Younger people are at risk because they are more susceptibel to depression or other feelings that would cause them to get the disorder.
Being teased or bullied – especially about weight - is emerging as a risk factor in many eating disorders.
Women because of their perceptive image in the world so they are expecte to look good so they stress over that.
What is the recommended treatment for the disorder?
Psychotherapy
Identify the symptoms early
Hospitalization; either in patient or out patient care or both.

How common is the disorder?
Binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States
About 1.25% of adult women and 0.42% of adult men have binge eating disorder.
About 1.6% of teens age 13 to 18 years old are affected.
