What are the symptoms?
Eating an unusual amount of food
Eating when not hungry
Eating in between meals
Eating fast during binge episodes.
Eating until you're uncomfortably full.
Eating alone or in secret to avoid embarrassment.
Diagnostic criteria for the disorder?
Eating much more rapidly than normal
Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty after overeating
How common is this disorder?
1.25% of adult women
0.42% of adult men
2.7% of adolescents will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime
2.8% of teens ages 15-16 will struggle with an eating disorder
What are risk factors?
Body dissatisfaction
diabetes
obesity
childhood abuse
genetics
mood disorder
Treatment for this disease?
Eat breakfeast
good support system
exercise
focus on health not weight
12 to 16 CBT sessions with a specialized therapist
interpersonal psychotherapy(IPT) and dialectical behavior therapy.
