Why do parents still persist with instruction in English despite students' apparent weakness in English?
English capable of fulfilling all three types of "capital" in the BOUR DI EUSI A N sense (Fan, 2023). Those types are "economic, social and cultural".
Learning English in China is still imbued with symbolic capital as it is perceived as being a key to success (Fan, 2023). Symbolic capital is the form other forms of capital take when they are seen as legitimate or valuable.
"Good command of English is necessary to get a degree and therefore a good job" (Fan, 2023)
Despite political tensions between China and US (an expressed by a participant in Fan, 2023 study (pg. 12)) there still seems to be considerable enthusiasm for students studying abroad.
Why is there a big discrepancy in the abilities of students' English levels in high school?

English compulsory at primary and tertiary level (MOE, in Fan, 2023).
Double reduction has lowered demand and hurt extra English learning industry, and there is more of a focus now on LOTE (languages other than English) evidenced by new gaokao regulations that say that universities must process all applications regardless of second language chosen however, many students will still persist with English as they are exposed to it early (Fan, 2023).
