CASE STUDY: The gift of honeymoon: An interesting case of furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in Taiwan and review of the literature (Chang & Tseng, 2019).
What happened?
-
-
The growth of fly larvae that infest living people's skin, necrotic tissues, and natural cavities is known as myiasis.
-
Why this case study is significance/medical
importance/in urgent need of action from relevant authorities?
Diverse clinical presentations
- Standardized diagnostic and treatment protocols would enhance the overall management
Increasing international travel
- Heighten the risk of individuals encountering myiasis, considering potential for widespread exposure
Study Area
D. hominis, known as human botfly and American warble fly, is an endemic species of South and Central America
It thrives in humid, rainy and warm environments like rainforests

How to Prevent
1) Mechanical removal
- Asphyxiate the larvae by occluding the central punctum with objects like adhesive tape, paraffin and chewing gum.
- The larvae will be forced to emerge out spontaneously because of suffocation and forceps were used the pull the larvae out.
2) Diagnosis
- Identification of the typical clinical appearance and relevant travel history.
- Imaging equipment such as Dermoscopy and Doppler ultrasonography
Surgical Treatment
- Remove of larvae by surgery
- Ensure removing the larvae more effectively
Related study
- In Mexico, Quintanilla-Cedillo et al., 25 cases of furuncular myiasis were identified using Doppler sonography for evaluation and proved its usefulness.
- help to evaluate and localise the number of subcutaneous larvae inside the furunculoid lesions and avoiding misdiagnosis.
