Research methodologies
primarily quantitative
my study
My proposal at this point is primarily quantitative but could be bolstered by qualitative student and teacher feedback
-
My proposal at this point is to provide my classes with more inquiry based instruction and compare their scores to previous year's who recieved more teacher guided instruction
Interview data could yield useful insight but will not be consistent with previous years' as I no longer have the same degree of access to these students
Example: . The effects of inquiry-based learning on student achievement in science: A quasi-experimental study
-
-
Doctoral dissertation, Miller, D. (2014). The effect of inquiry-based, hands-on labs on achievement in middle school science (Doctoral dissertation, Liberty University). Liberty University Digital Commons. https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/doctoral/896/
results and implications
-
-
Traditional, teacher guided instruction still has value but inquiry-based education improved student performance (albeit not to the level of statistical significance) and engagement
larger pool of students could reduce the effect size needed to produce a statistically significant effect
-
-
Primarily qualitative
-
-
-
Example: When They See Us: A Case Study Exploring Culturally Responsive School Leadership in a Midwestern Suburban Middle School
Possibly my bias and a reflection of my predilections and strengths but purely qualitative is of limited prescriptive value
Combination
-
Quantitative shows that an intervention was effective, qualitative describes how that intervention was carried out (among other information)
both examples are primarily one or the other but contain elements of both, especially Miller's (2014)
