Major functions of the muscular system
Support
Protection
Movement
Heat Generation
Blood circulation
3 types of muscles & their functions
Cardiac Muscle: The heart
Smooth Muscle: located in various internal structures including the digestive tract, uterus and blood vessels such as arteries
Skeletal Muscle: specialised tissue that is attached to bones and allows movement
Names of all the skeletal muscles
biceps BrachiL:flex the lower arm
Sartourius:lateral rotation and abduction of thigh; flexion and medial rotation of leg
Oblique:The abdominis rectus fibers run straight up
Deltoid:superficial muscle at the shoulder that allows one to raise their hand
Pectoralis major:control the movement of the arm, create lateral, vertical, or rotational motion
Sarcomere
A band, I band, H zone, Z line, myosin, actin, tropomyosin, thick filaments and thin filaments
Sliding filament theory of muscle contraction
a muscle fiber contracts when myosin filaments pull actin filaments closer together and thus shorten sarcomeres within a fiber
Neuromuscular junction
where nerves and muscle fibers meet
Action potential in a muscle fiber
increases the calcium ion concentration in muscle plasma
Muscle coverings (connective tissue coverings)
Epimysium: The outermost layer of tissue surrounding the entire muscle.
Endomysium: The innermost layer surrounding individual muscle fibers.
Perimysium: The middle layer surrounding bundles of muscle fibers.
Disorders associated with the Muscular system
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Muscular dystrophy
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
Myasthenia gravis
Sarcopenia
