Machines Transfer Mechanical Energy
Simple Machines
Simple Machines are machines that work with one movement.
Inclined Plane: A flat sloped surface.
Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.
Wedge: Inclined plane that moves.
Lever: A simple machine that pivots around a fixed point.
Wheel and Axle: A shaft attached to a wheel of a larger diameter.
Pulley: Grooved Wheel with a rope or cable wrapped around it.
Complex Machines
Two or more simple machines working together would be a complex machine.
Machines at Work
The work you do on a machine is the input work, and the output work is the work that the machine does.
Changing Distance and Force
Changing Direction
Machines can also change the direction of the force.
When the input distance of a machine is larger than the output distance, the output force is larger than the input force.
Efficiency
Newton's Simple Laws and Machines
Efficiency is the ratio of output work to input work.
The efficiency of a machine will never be 100%. This is because some energy will be lost through wasted thermal energy because of friction.
A force will change an objects motion. A object would move a certain direction if the force applied to it was that certain direction.
