Satellites
Astronomical satellite
Astronomical satellites are like huge telescopes floating in the space. They are used to investigate different types of celestial bodies and phenomena in space.
Example: Hubble Space Telescope
Geostationary Orbits
A geostationary satellite is an earth-orbiting satellite and placed directly over the equator. It revolves in the same direction the earth rotates (west to east) and takes 24 hours to complete one rotation. A geostationary satellite is used in Direct broadcast TV, Communication network, global positioning or GPS.
Earth observation satellite
It is the use of remote sensing technologies to monitor land, marine (seas, rivers, lakes) and atmosphere.
How it works: The electromagnetic energy reflects off the Earth's surface and up to the satellite sensor, which collects and records information about that energy. That information is transmitted to a receiving station in the form of data that are processed into an image.
Uses
: agriculture, water resources, urban planning, rural development, mineral prospecting, environment, forestry, ocean resources and disaster management.
Navigation Satellite
The navigation satellites transmit radio signals from the medium earth orbit. By the navigating satellites the GPS Global Positioning System operates.
Eg: Galileo
Eg: Bai Dou
Eg: QZSS
Communication Satellite
Transport information from one place to another. It is an artificial satellite, that transmits the signals via a transponder, by creating a channel between a transmitter and a receiver at different earth locations.
The transponders as amplifiers and transmitters boost the incoming signals and change its frequency.
how it works:1. The signals from the broadcast on the earth are beamed to the satellite from the ground station, process known as uplink.
The final step involves a downlink in which the data is sent to the receiver on earth. Usually there is one uplink and more downlinks.
Definition: Satellite is an object that is in consistent and stable orbit around a body, usually a planet. There are 2 main types of satellites, natural satellites like moon, and artificial satellites which humans have launched to orbit around the earth.
