Jejunoileal Atresia - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Use of a nasogastric tube to decompress the stomach and relieve distension.
    - - Correction of electrolyte abnormalities and hypovolemia.
    - - Initiated if there is suspicion for perforation or infection.
  - - - Based on the location of the lesion, anatomic findings, associated conditions, and length of the remaining intestine.
    - - Dilated and hypertrophied proximal bowel is resected.
      - Primary end-to-end anastomosis with or without tapering is the most common technique.
    - - If the proximal atretic segment is grossly dilated and hypertrophied over an extended distance.
      - Common in high jejunal atresia or marked discrepancy.
      - Distal Segment Resection:
        
        Short length (4-5 cm) of the distal bowel is obliquely resected.
        
        Mesenteric side left longer than the antimesenteric aspect.
        
        Incision along the antimesenteric border may be needed to create a "fish mouth" for adequate distal enterotomy.
    - - Distal limb of the atretic bowel is cannulated with a rubber catheter.
      - Irrigated with warm saline to evaluate for distal obstruction
