Court roles
Judge Advocate General.
The JAG's Letters Patent give authority over all Service personnel in relation to the business of the courts and provide the authority to issue sentencing guidelines and practice directions for the Service Courts.
High Court.
They try serious criminal cases, important civil cases and assist the Lord and Lady Justices to hear appeals. High Court Judges are given the prefix 'The Honourable' and are referred to as 'Mr/Mrs/Ms Justice surname'. So, for example, a High Court Judge would formally be referred to as The Honourable Mrs Justice Smith.
High Court Masters.
A Master is a judge who at first instance in the High Court deals with all aspects of a claim, from its issue until the trial, where it is then delivered by a High Court judge or a Master.
Circuit Judge.
Some Circuit Judges deal specifically with criminal or civil cases, while some are authorised to hear public and/or private law family cases, and some sit across a range of jurisdictions.
Recorder.
Recorders are required to manage cases actively as well as to determine claims at trial. A recorder's duties include assisting the parties to prepare for trial, presiding over court proceedings and delivering judgments in both applications and contested trials.
