Bacteriology exam 4
Antibiotics
Penicillins
Inhibits transpeptidation (crosslinking of NAM) and thus cell wall synthesis (which causes osmotic lysis of bacteria)
Has beta-lactam nucleus (pentagon with a garage)
-
Bacitracin
Interferes with bactoprenol, a carrier that transports peptidoglycan subunits to the cell wall
-
-
-
-
-
Antibiotic resistance
Drug unable to bind to specific microbial target (due to mutation) but other antibiotics may still work
-
Drug prevented from entering microbe (mycobacterium has mycolic acid in cell wall which is impermeable to most drugs)
Drug inactivation (penillinase or beta-lactamase can break bond in beta lactum rings and inactivates penicillin)
-
Bacterial diseases
-
Digestive system
-
Cholera
-
-
Symptoms: "rice water stool" (loss of 1L water per hour), dehydration and cramps, blood thickens, causes shock coma, and 70% mortality rate
Treatment: Antibiotics (tetracycline), ORS (oral rehydration solution: electrolytes and glucose)
-
-
Peptic ulcers
-
Infects 2/3 of population, but 2% have ulcers and 1% has cancer
Symptoms: Abdominal pain, gastritis, peptic ulcers
-
Diagnosis: radiol;abeled urea converted to ammonia and CO2 by urease, and excess CO2 can be registered by a urea breath test
-
-
Nervous system diseases
Botulism
-
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, slurred speech, difficult swallowing, dilated pupils, flaccid paralysis (respiratory paralysis in 1-2 days)
Treat: Intestinal tract washing (enemas and drinking lots of fluid), botulism immunoglobulin (BIG) antitoxin, and antimicrobial drugs
Tetanus
-
Treatment: sedatives, dark quiet room, antitoxin, antibiotics
Meningitis
Caused by many things, but mainly 5 bacteria
Caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae, Neisseria meningitidis, Listeria monocytogenes
-
Symptoms: sudden high fever, pounding headache or stiff neck (from inflammation) (cranial meninges: severe headache, vomiting, pain) (spinal meninges: stiff neck, altered muscle controls)
