(testing for starch)
Dark blue/violet - positive result (starch present)
Yellow - negative result (no starch)
Benedict Test
(test for reducing sugars)
Brick Red - large amount of reducing sugar
Orange Red - moderate
Green/Yellow - traces of reducing sugar
Blue - negative result
Molisch Test
(test for presence of carbohydrates)
Purple ring - carb present
Other color - no carb
Testing for proteins
Biuret test
for polypeptides and identify if there is protein
Blue color - negative result /no peptide
Dark Violet color - positive / peptide present
Testing for lipids
Emulsification test
emulsifies - positive result
two layers - negative result
Sudan Red Test
Sudan dissolve - positive for lipids
Did not dissolve - negative for lipids
Lipids are non-polar molecules + disperse in water only in presence of an emulsifier
Polysaccharides
Structural Polysaccharides
Cellulose - building material of plants (cell wall)
Chitin - building material of the cuticle in insects
Storage Polysaccharides
Starch (in plants)
Glycogen (in animals)
