Why was it wanted
-
The deterioration of the Soviet-China relationship meant that the US no longer saw Communism as a single and united front. They felt that peace with both of them was possible, since both were looking for a close ally. Mao began to disagree with the politics of Khrushchev and Brezhnev.
Both countries wanted to avoid a nuclear war after CMC, and felt that peace was the only way to ensure this.
The Vietnam war showed weapons and military might didn't guarantee victory in a war. Either way it seemed more effective to resolve conflicts with each other

Lack of civil liberties under Communist governments meant that many of the western population saw the Cold War as American liberty vs Soviet Oppression
Vietnam
Johnson and Nixon both prioritised ending the war, but neither were willing to accept defeat
The USSR would be unwilling to make peace with America while America was actively fighting Communism in Vietnam
