How has earth changed over time?
Plate tectonics
Claim: The Cause of tectonic plates movement is convection where there are multiple effects caused by their movement.
Evidence: There are three main parts to tectonic plates: convection plate boundaries and continental drift. I'll start with convection. Convection is what causes the movements of all the plates its when Magma Moves up in the mantle of the earth cooling and since cold things get more dense it sinks causing it to heat back up and since hot things are less dense it rises this happens over and over again causing the plates to move and shift because of the magmas motion. Next are the plate boundaries There are three types of plate boundaries: Divergent convergent and transformative plate boundaries. The divergent plate boundaries move away from each other. The convergent plate boundaries move towards each other and the transformative boundaries move alongside each other.(In different directions) These plate boundaries can cause many problems like volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis at each plate boundary. Finally continental drift is when the continents move like when all the continents were one big one called pangea. That was continental drift. It also broke apart because of continental drift. They move very slowly though only a couple inches or centimeters a year. Places like California will be very slowly removed from the United States because of continental drift.
Connection: I kind of have a cycle with minecraft I will get bored of the games im playing so Ill boot up an old favorite that I haven't played in a while like minecraft I will play the game a bunch for like 2 weeks then leave it alone for like 2 months kind of like of the magma rises and falls back down over and over again fueling the movement of the plates. I really enjoy the game the problem with me is im playing it like I used to when I was young even though they've added all this new cool stuff that would probably change my playstyle a lot so I think that probably a big reason I get bored so fast because I've been playing this way for so long that it starting to feel like i'm playing the same thing over and over again.
Picture: Here is an Image showing how many worlds I’ve made over the years I'll come back to play on a few of them but most of the time when I come back I’ll start a new one.
Introduction
Claim: Earth is nowhere near the same as it was once it first formed it has changed a lot over the time that it has existed
Conection:
What is your connection to Earth's history?
Minecraft and the ways it has changed
Why did you choose it: because Minecraft has changed a lot from when I first started playing it just like how the earth has changed a lot from when it was first made.
How does it fit with how Earth has changed over time:
Plate Tectonics How me playing the game is like convection I'm always going away and coming back to the game after spurts of time
Dating Rocks How minecraft has fossils
Rock Cycle The different rocks that exist in minecraft and in real life
Picture: In these two Images you can see the old Minecraft home screen and the new one this is to show the change that has taken place in this game.
Dating rocks
Claim: The way we find the age of rocks is by looking at fossil rock layers and the amount of lead in a material.
Evidence: Fossils help us understand the environment that was here before we were alive they don't show us the surroundings or what the planet looked like before we came but they do show what was alive before us fossils are very rare there is a certain set of things you need to make a fossil First when the animal dies it needs to be covered quickly by something it has to be quick otherwise the bones and hard parts will be destroyed by the elements Then minerals will need to seep into the body pursuing it further the animal has to have hard body parts though otherwise they won't become fossils the only way for a soft body part can be fossilized is if it was trapped in amber. The only rock that can have fossils in it is sedimentary rocks. Fossils aren't completely safe once they are fossilized though they can still be crushed, melted , moved and eroded. Relative dating tells us in which events happened we look at rock layers and see what happened we can make rough guesses to when these layers formed but they aren't the most accurate though still it is very important to know when the events happened it tells us a lot like what was there before such as were an ocean or desert. The next type of dating tells us exactly when things happen it's called absolute dating it gives the absolute age of rocks we do this by counting the number of lead particles in a given sample and since this lead was once a radioactive material like uranium we are able to tell its age because we know the half life when half an isotope to decay using this and by counting the lead particles we are able to get the absolute age of something. To find the lead you have to be in a completely lead filled environment which is a hard task but was accomplished leading us to find that the earth is 4.5 billion years old.
Connection: One time when I was young I was playing some minecraft just mining for diamonds like I usually did when i suddenly hit a white block I had never seen before when I mined it it said bone block I was immediately confused because I had never seen the block before so I figured it was rare and valuable so i mined up all the bones I could find what I didn't know is that I had discovered a fossil in minecraft know these are not like the fossils in real life the fossils in minecraft do not exist to any animal in game or out of game they are just random things made of bone but they are still really cool to see sadly there is no sap in minecraft so there is know way for that kind of fossilization in the game but I still though that this was really cool.
Picture: I did not take this picture because fossils in Minecraft are pretty hard to find and I only found the one that I instantly mined up but still mine probably looked around the same as this which I think is pretty cool that they would include this in their game and just make it a cool thing for players to find you won't get anything exceptionally cool from finding one but it's still a cool thing to have in your world.

Reflection:
What was the best thing you learned about Earth's history?
Probably how much the earth has changed because at one point Iowa was under water and there was a massive supercontinent which is just so crazy
How has your understanding of rocks changed?
I thought that rocks were just rocks but actually they change so much and change into new and old rocks which is really cool
What are you still curious about?
I'm still curious to know how many times has the rock cycle happened and how many times has one rock been destroyed and remade all over again.
Picture: Here are 2 Images comparing the oldest version of Minecraft I can play and the newest. This should show you how much the game has changed and added since I first started playing.
Rock cycle
claim: Rocks are constantly changing and forming due to the Conditions they face.
Evidence: There are three types of rock and each is made in a different way the first rock is made by smaller particles clumping together to make a larger rock called sedimentary rock the next rock is made under the earth by a large amount of heat and pressure this rock is called metamorphic rock the finale rock is made by when magma cools and hardens this rock is called igneous rock. The rocks change in a cycle the rocks can change from one rock type to another an example would be an igneous rock weathering into sediment then the sediment is compacted back into sedimentary rock the rocks change forms all the time to show how much they change I’ll show you the rock cycle we will start with sediment which can compact into sedimentary rock the sedimentary rock can erode back into sediment but let's continue on once the sedimentary rock gets enough heat and pressure built up it can turn into a metamorphic rock which can erode back into sediment after metamorphic rock is made it can melt into magma once this magma cools it turns into igneous rock three things can happen from here there could be heat and pressure and it could turn back to a metamorphic rock or it could just melt and turn back into magma finally it could erode and weather away turning back into sediment to start the cycle all over again. The rocks tell us a lot of different things about the environment sandstone is a sedimentary rock because it is made by all the sand particles of the desert clumped together to make a hard solid object this shows us where different types of environments were also igneous rock is made by magma cooling quickly so this can probably show us were volcanoes used to be as well.
Connection: Minecraft has plenty of different types of rock sedimentary rocks like sandstone that can be found under deserts and igneous rocks like obsidian and basalt. There are even some metamorphic rocks like lapis lazuli. there is no rock cycle like in real life but some of the igneous rocks can be made like real life such as obsidian which is made when water and lava touch kind of like real life where magma cools rapidly there is also magma in Minecraft but all it does is hurt you if you step on it.
Pictures: Here is a rock cycle diagram that I made inside Minecraft. It shows all the stuff inside of the rock cycle. I had to get a little imaginative to make some of the blocks work but I still think it looks pretty good.
