Human Bio
Cells and Tissue
-
-
Cytosol
-
75% - 90% water, with complex mixture of dissolved substances (e.g. salts and carbohydrates)
-
-
-
Nucleus
largest organelles, usually oval/spherical in shape
-
-
Inside = DNA, contains inherited info. DNA controls structure of cell + way it functions
inside nucleus, nucleolus plays a part in manufacturing proteins.
Ribosomes
very small, spherical organelles
at ribosomes, amino acids joined together to produce proteins
-
Endoplasmic Reticulum
-
used for storage, support, synthesis and transport within cell
-
-
Golgi Body
-
-
-
series of flattened membranes stacked upon each other, positioned near nucleus.
Lysomes
-
Lysosomes can join with vesicles and digestive enzymes they contain break down material inside vesicles.
-
Mitochondria
-
double membrane
-
inner membrane (cristae) arranged into series of folds that extend into the interior of the organelles. Increases surface area.
-
-
Cilia and Flagella
fine projections that beat back and forth to move either whole cell / substances over surface of the cell.
-
-
Cytoskeleton
framework of protein fibres that gives the cell its shape, anchors organelles and assists cell movement. Consists:
-
-
inclusions
chemical susbtances that aren't apart of cell structure. Found in cytoplasm e.g. haemoglobin and melanin
-
-
Musculo-skeletal system
muscle cells
form of long, thin fibres with ability to contract
-
-
-
-
Smooth
-
-
Smooth wrap around alimentary canal. Contract: diameter of canal narrows and pushes contents inside.
Gastrointestinal tract, reproductive tract.
Cardiac
-
-
when cardiac muscles contract, reduces space in chambers and pushes blood outside into BV.
