Physical/Natural reasons that hinder or help development
resources
Without a lot of natural resources, trade will be weakened and development will be slowed.
Even if the country does have resources, they need to be able to tap into it.
hazards
Natural Hazards
Volcanoes, tsunamis, storms, typhoons.
Govt. money is spent rebuilding, not going towards healthcare, education, roads, etc.
Location/Terrain
Mountainous places may have more of a struggle due to having less flat land for farming
Landlocked countries cannot access the ocean, and as such their trade options are limited.
They may have to pay a fee to reach their ocean through their neighbouring countries.
Climate
With a rough climate, farming and agriculture may be trickier, and thus you cannot produce food as easy. This impacts development.
A country with very fertile soil will have to spend less on food and energy for agriculture, whereas a country with very infertile soil will need to expend a large amount of time and energy just to feed their population, or worse yet, spend more money on the import of food.
Human/Historical reasons that hinder or help development
Trade
Countries that export more than they import have a trade surplus, this can improve the natural economy.
Having good trade relationships.
Trading goods and services is more profitable than raw materials.
Politics
Aid can help some countries and develop key services and infrastructure faster.
Too much reliance on aid might stop other trade links from being established
Some governments are corrupt, money doesn't get spent on the right priorities, so the gap between the rich and the poor widens.
Health
Lack of clean water and poor healthcare means a large number of people suffer from diseases.
People who are ill cannot work so there is little contribution to the economy.
More money spent on healthcare means less spent on development
Education
Education creates a skilled workforce meaning more goods and services are produced
educated people earn more money, meaning they also pay more taxes. This money can help develop the country in the future
Educating and empowering women boosts the work force and the economy.
Aid
Corruption in local and national governments
The stability of the government can affect the country's ability to trade
ability of the country to invest into services and infrastructure
History
Colonialism, the aquiring of full, or partial, polical control over another country, occupying it with settlers and exploiting it economically
Countries that went through industrialisation earlier, will now have developed further.
