MAC address(media access control)
given to nic when it is manufactured(nic stands for network interface card)
every network hardware device has a unqiue mac address
used to send data between two items of hardware on a network
281 trillion unique mac adresses(2^48)
usually written in hex
first three bytes is the manufacturer code and the last three is a serial code
IP addresses
internet protocol addresses
Dynamic ip addresses,
router gives different ip addresses every time its connected
static ip addresses
stays the same when connected
ipv6 allows 2^128 to be registered
IPv6 addresses are separated into eight groups each containing four hex digits and separated by a colon
hex digits in lower case, leading zero shouldnt be written
better security than ipv4
ipv4 allows 2^32 amount of devices to be registered which poses a problem with the amount of devices nowadays
seperated using fullstops
uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to assign ip addresses
