Persecution of Buddhists

Although most of the population was Buddhist, Diem and his administration asserted catholic supremacy.
The persecution came to a head on May 8 1963 when many Buddhists assembled in the streets of Hue to celebrate the birth of Buddha. Suddenly, Diems troops came in and fired into the crowd, ordering them to take down the flags.
Some Buddhists, such as quang duc burned themselves to death in protest

He won a rigged election
He won 600,000 votes when only 450,000 were registered to vote
The citizens saw this and it deepened his unpopularity because the south Vietnamese saw he wasn't the real peoples choice

The Vietcong talked to many of the villagers about how much better north Vietnam was, turning them away from capitalism.
