Problem: getting young students to engage in outdoor activities during the winter
Common themes why young students don't engage in outdoor activities (drawbacks)
Some students don't enjoy the colder weather, as it makes the motivation to do physical activities much more difficult
The winter has many more risks for drivers who are less confident
Many winter activities involve going to the mountains which involves, time, and money in order to get there
Winter activities are often more risky than summer activities therefore involve having to go with someone which isn't always assessable for all, as being a young adult is hard to make friends
Winter activities are more of a commitment as they often involve more gear which involves more time. This is difficult for many students as time is difficult in an already busy schedule.
As there is often more danger involved, winter sports often involve experience, and if experience is lacking one would have to gain experience either through friends or lessons which is a lot of time, money, and commitment
Defiantly much easier to get into with previous knowledge of being involved in the activity as a young kid
The equipment needed in order to get into many winter activities is often very pricey
Rental equipment is often not the best quality making the experience not as enjoyable as it may be with higher end (but more pricey) equipment
What is involved in engaging in outdoor activities
As most winter outdoor activities are in the mountains, having some sort of vehicle transportation with well equipped winter tires is needed
Most winter activities involve some sort of equipment in order to participate
Having previous knowledge is required to be involved in a winter activity, if no previous knowledge, than knowledge must be gained through someone else
Being outside during winter, appropriate winter gear is a must in order to participate in a winter activity
Most winter activities are time consuming and can take anywhere from a few hours to a whole day in-counting travel time
Most winter activities involve money to either start, do, or buy equipment, therefore involves either a steady income of some sort
What is the demographics that are more likely to be involved in outdoor activities during winter/why are they able to do so
They often have been doing the activity since a kid so are more likely to be used to the colder weather
They are often older, being apart of the middle-upper class. This is because winter activities are expensive and require a steady income
Often older (typically individuals aged 40-50) winter activities require one to be young enough as they involve being physically active, however they also involve someone who is nearing/ at the end of their career as they require more time
Typically individuals involved in winter activities are relatively fit and healthy, as although it is not required, it helps with excelling and the enjoyment of the activities
Common themes why young students who do engage in outdoor activities enjoy doing so (what can be gained)
Being involved in a winter activity allows individuals (especially students who struggle in this area) create new friendships and meet new people
Being a student can often times be isolating especially during the already gloomy winter months, actively engaging in a winter activity allows students to feel as though they are part of a collective group
Being a student often involves lots of sitting inside at a desk. Being a part of an activity during the winter months allows individual's to move their body and develop healthy habits during the winter months
Students feel overwhelmed with school work which is mainly throughout the winter months, getting outside and doing something completely different from the school work allows students to destress, and come back with a clear headspace
Students often spend a majority of their time inside doing either school work on their own time or engaging in class lectures, which are often relatively dark. This can be hard on ones mental health, by getting outside during the winter months helps students get that much needed sunlight, improving mental health
Students are often very motivated on their school work which is great, however it is healthy to have more than one goal and passion to strive towards in order to not get "too" caught up in a current goal. Engaging in outdoor activities helps students discover new passions
