Major functions of the muscular system
Muscles are organs that generate force to cause all types of
movement
3 types of muscles & their functions
The 3 types of muscle tissue in the body
are skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle
Skeletal
Body contains over 600 skeletal muscles
Connective tissue covers over muscles
Each muscle fiber is a single, long, cylindrical muscle cell
Smooth
Smooth muscle cells are elongated with tapered ends, lack striations (look
“smooth”), and have a relatively undeveloped sarcoplasmic reticulum
Contain thick and thin filaments, but they are arranged more randomly
Cardiac
Cardiac muscle is only found in the heart, If it is found else where, it is most likely cancer
Sarcomere
Neuromuscular junction
Sliding filament theory of muscle contraction
Action potential in a muscle fiber
Muscle coverings
Disorders associated with the Muscular system
Muscular Dystrophy
Muscle weakness and atrophy
Causes and risk factors: Genetic , different types depending on mutation
Ex: Myotonic, ermery-drefuss
Symptoms: Loss of strength, delayed motor skills, mental retardation, eyelids drooping
Treatment options: No known cur, physical therapy, medication, surgery to improve function
Fibromyalgia
Muscle pain
Causes or risk factors: Exact cause is unknown, it can prossibly be caused by
Physical trauma, sleep diterbances
Myasthenia Gravis
Neuromuscular disorder that blocks neurotransmitters
Causes or risks factors: Autoimmune, possible tumor of the thymos, age
Symptoms: Muscle weakness, shortness of breath, facial paralysis, drooping eyeslids
Treatment options: No known cure, medications, thymectomy, eye patch for double vision
Cerebral Palsy
Mytosis
Inflamation of the muscles
Causes: Infection, autoimmune muscle trauma, medication induced
Symptoms: Muscle weakness, swelling, tenderness, muscle damage, myalgia
Treatment options: Mediacation, antibiotics, reduce inflammation
