Rizal was sent to Manila, accompanied by Paciano, to study in Ateneo. The school was previously called Escuela Pia or Charity School of Manila founded in 1817 and supervised by the Jesuits. He almost be not accepted but became enrolled due to the help of Manuel Xeres Burgos. He was an externo or living-out student, living in Caraballo St. In Santa Cruz

1st year of Rizal in Ateneo.
Attended a mass on his first day for success and guidance. His classmates were composed of Spaniards, Insulars, Mestizos, and Natives. He also took private lessons in Santa Isabel College during breaktime to improve his knowledge of Spanish.
He also became an emperor of the Cathaginians. On the second-half of his year, he did not try studying as hard sa the previous semester. Yet, he placed second at the end of the year and his grades remained excellent.
