What is the overall aim of the project?, Reading Mentors Pilot Evaluation …
What is the overall aim of the project?
To increase the number of Bookmark reading volunteers and subsequently reading sessions
To increase a love of reading in Bookmark primary pupils to give them a fairer chance in life.
End of term teacher surveys
To increase a love of reading in sixth form students plus other volunteering benefits (sense of purpose, accountability, confidence boosting, positive wellbeing)
Include in separate survey to these volunteers about their experience?
To help create a partnership between the primary and independent schools taking part.
This is up to them to decide?
To create a pipeline of sustainable pipeline of Bookmark volunteers e.g. Reading Mentors go on to be campus ambassadors and lifetime volunteers
Longer term data - vol mentor -> vol rate?
To raise the brand of Bookmark across several independent schools broadening our network of support. To leverage on these contacts in other ways – parent volunteers, opening doors to marketing opportunities and events, fundraising potential
Internal SLT judgement?
To support independent schools with their charitable aims. Independent schools are currently under scrutiny to demonstrate work in their local community.
This is up to them to decide?
Reading Mentors Pilot Evaluation
What are the key workstreams / planned activities?
Volunteers team to manage independent schools akin to a corporate relationship, to manage onboarding and experience of reading mentors.
SRM team to manage primary schools as Bookmark partner schools, train staff and support as usual.
Independent schools are to provide “Reading Mentors” to work as Bookmark volunteers, to support primary schools with F2F reading sessions. BSS and EJ to facilitate and build these relationships with SBD to onboard primary schools as necessary.
What are the key deliverables of the project?
To have markedly increased the number of reading sessions delivered in 2023/24 school year.
This would mean 240 reading sessions per school term per term but, realistically, we would expect 178 reading sessions each term. This would be 890 reading sessions per term and 1780 extra reading sessions for the school year. We could then build upon this number and scale.
We would request a minimum of ten volunteers per senior school per term – this would then allow us to assist a ‘silver’ package primary school at the very least.
To have markedly increased the number of Bookmark reading volunteers. This would be ten volunteers per term for two terms.
To be working with 3 independent schools, twinned with primary partner schools
What will the outcomes of the project be?
To have measured impact of a change in delivery model for reading sessions (1/week for example)
To have tested a model to be able to make a decision on delivery as business as usual within the 24/25 FY
To have measured the impact for peer mentoring
Usual indicators such as volunteer perceptions are already in the end of programme review. We can get the mentors to complete these surveys separately with some edits to the survey to reflect other questions we want to ask.
Impact - What are the project’s measures of success and how will they be evaluated?
Impact of session provided by one session per week pilot versus DHL pilot.
End of programme review can provide us data that can be compared for both of these. Can filter based on school name?
Activeness of reading mentors- track their cancellation and no-show rate against usual volunteers.
This will be calculated via salesforce. I think Impact could calculate this. Imagine this will be done by DST as the pilot goes on
Attrition rate of senior schools- do they work with us year on year and is it cost effective?
Reading session numbers- has it boosted charity figures overall in a meaningful way?
What are the strategic objectives of the project?
To increase the number of reading sessions delivered by Bookmark
We can calculate the number of reading sessions added by the mentors - there may be a bit of discussion as to whether the overall number of volunteers increased or not
To increase the love of reading in partner primary schools
This will be accounted for within our normal end of programme review as well as the end of term teacher surveys.
To increase the number of volunteers at Bookmark
We can calculate the number of mentors who volunteered - there may be a bit of discussion as to whether the overall number of volunteers increased or not
