Both treated poorly
"...Niang loathed me and despised my aunt. It saddened me that Aunt Baba seemed to be under a life sentence of subordination. Though I was little. I understood the awkwardness of her position: how Niang's wishes always took precedence, how she had to demonstrate caution, submission and humility at every turn." (p59)
Father and Niang did not like them being together because Aunt Baba had given Adeline things that they did not support
