Definition and Etiology of Varicella Zoster
Chickenpox or varicella is an infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The virus causes chickenpox (usually a primary infection of a non-immune host) and shingles (after reactivation of a latent infection).
The disease is transmitted by inhalation of infected aerosol droplets. The virus is highly contagious and can spread quickly.
