B7 Spread of Disease
-
Bacteria
Bacteria reproduce rapidly inside organisms and may produce toxins that damage tissues and cause illnesses.
Gonorrhoea
SPREAD BY:
Direct sexual contact - it is a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE! (STD), we refer to them as sexually transmitted infections (STI)
-
PREVENTION & TREATMENT:
Treat with antibiotics, but multiple strains of the bacteria exist that are resistant to antibiotics.
-
-
General Knowlege
4 types of pathogen
viruses, bacteria, protists, fungi
-
-
Fungi
Fungal cells have a nucleus and so are eukaryotic. Not all fungi cause disease. E.g. yeast is a single-celled fungus that is economically important because we use it to make some bread and beer. (But not athletes foot!). Not all fungi are single-celled. Some such as mushrooms are multicellular and so much larger. These are still made of tiny cells like yeast, but have many more of them.
Rose Black Spot (PLANTS)
-
SYMPTOMS:
Purple or black spots on leaves, the leaves turn yellow and drop early.
-
-
Protists
Protists are a group of microorganisms that have features that belong to animals, plants and fungi. Some are like animals, others more like plants and some, called moulds are closest to fungi. They are all eukaryotic, which means they have a nucleus.
Malaria
SYMPTOMS:
Recurrent (lots of) fever, it can be fatal.
PREVENTION & TREATMENT:
-
-
-
Scientists are using the genetically modified malaria parasites and have developed a vaccine against malaria.
SPREAD BY:
Mosquitos feed on the blood of infected people. Mosquitos carry the protist pathogen and infect other people. The mosquito (carrying the pathogen) is the VECTOR.
