Case Study: Population Change in a Developing Country-
India (Kolkata)
Current Population
India has a current population of 1.4 billion
In Kolkata, an Eastern city in India along the banks of the river Hooghly, 15 million people live there.
The population of Kolkata has grown rapidly because of rural to urban migration
What is Rural to Urban Migration?
Push Factors? Pull Factors?
Lack of Clean Water
In Kolkata the sewage pipes are unable to cope with the high population density which can cause the pipes to burst and pollute the water supply
During the Monsoon Season rainfall also causes these pipes to overflow and contaminate the water supply.
The supply of clean water is especially a problem in the shanty towns in Kolkata. People are forced to use water that could be polluted which causes the spread of disease.
Lack of Open Space
The issue of overcrowding causes a lack of open space in the city
The outskirts of the city once had open space however it is now home to millions of bustee dwellers as the city is beginning to spread into the surrounding areas of Kolkata
Due to this lack of open space there is very little space for recreational areas in the city.
What other issues does the lack of open space cause?
Overcrowding
Due to rapid increase of the population in Kolkata there is not enough living space for all the people who have migrated to this location
This overcrowding in the city has resulted in many people living in shanty towns or bustees
What is a Shanty Town or a Bustee?
The problem of overcrowding makes it very difficult to provide services to the people that live there.
What Services would be under pressure because of overcrowding?
