Main Plot: Lily
Big Sister Nostalgia has just left Spivey's Grove SC after finding out their parents had planned to marry her off to Noah Holdtstaff, the most notorious bootlegger in town. When she leaves, their parents give him Lily.
Lily is in love with Henry Whit, who has been courting now 14 year old Lily since she was 12. Henry is 18
Concocts a scheme to get out of the marriage by using Noah's vices against him

Married to Jack Richardson in 1911, when he had her sent to Spivey's Grove from Richmond Va as a mail-order bride
Little does Lily know, their mother, Roxie, has always had a plan to get her out of the marriage to Noah

Has the police on his payroll
Lily will soon find out that he sells more than reefer and hooch
Sells heroine to performers on the chitlin circuit, as well as women who willingly or forcefully make themselves available for ungodly use.
Gets Lily a Remington Derringer Model 95 for her purse. Winchester Rifle Model 1895 and Colt M1911 for the house.
Subplot: Sara Deets
Befriends Lily after she follows her father to Sarah's house. Sarah explains their relationship to little Lily
Sells Lily her house when she decides to leave Spivey's Grove. Lily uses the dwelling to open her first mercantile
Finds out Sara owns quite a bit of land in Spivey's Grove, and that Roland Spivey is her father.
Subplot: Jake Richardson
Lily and Nostalgia's father who sells Lily to Noah Holdstaff. Uses the money to buy a farm on the outskirts of Spivey's Grove.
Tries to sell goods to Chavis's Mercantile, but gets shafted on the payout. Lily helps her father by purchasing Sarah Deets home, and opening her first mercantile. Makes it possible for coloreds and poor whites to shop in peace.
Subplot: Jake falls in love with DeRotha, but she is in love with Chester. Jake is hurt and finds a job working on the railroad for a few months before coming back to Florence County, and buying land in Spivey's Grove
Subplot: The Richardson Family History
Revealed whenever Lily has to sleep with Noah as her escape from reality.
Chronicles Jake and Chester's journey from an island off the coast of South Carolina where they were sharecroppers and the sons of ex slaves.
Revealed that Jake is the son of Master Richardson, and not Jody Richardson, a sharecropper who died on the plantation.
Request that Lily does not pursue the matter when she figures it out.
Subplot: Lucy Mae Bentley
Has several run ins with Lily until she is caught stealing potatoes in Lily's and Noah's home. Lily eventually uses Lucy to break into a secret room Noah has locked up in the house. Lucy and Lily become very good friends. Lucy ends up leaving Spivey's Grove and marrying Thornton Whit.
Subplot: Mechanics and Farmers Bank, of Durham NC
When Noah dies Lily attempts to open a branch of M and F Bank in Florence for the colored citizens, but their entry is blocked by the KKK.
After being refused by other banks in the county because she is colored and female, Lily attempts to apply for a Wells Fargo Safe. When she sees it is mandatory to reveal her color on the application, Mrs. Barden agrees to fill it out for her.
Because the serial number for the safe is connected to Mrs. Barden. She presses charges when the safe is found in possession of the KKK.
Mrs. Barden later reveals to Lily that Wells Fargo has been allowing colored people to open accounts since 1888. The reason they asked for color and sex on the application is for the sake of researching demographics, and not as a determination of service.
Subplot: Miss Bailey
Being courted by a science teacher at the Voorhees Industrial Institute for Colored Youths in Denmark , South Carolina. He eventually helps Lily research white sweet and purple potatoes, thus giving Jake an advantage over the other farmers in town, and prompting Mr. Chavis to buy his product.
Very hurt when Lily marries Noah because she had imagined Lily going to a normal school, and eventually taking her place as school mistress in a few years.
Subplot: The Sister Circle.
A group of women who get together and play Spades, drink hooch, and smoke cigars on Wednesday evenings while the rest of the town of Spivey's Grove is at Bible Study.
Members of the circle are Lily, Sarah Deets, Mrs. Barden, and Lucy Mae. When Sarah leaves town, School Mistress Bailey takes her place.
Subplot: Thornton Whit
He and Mrs. Barden are instrumental in Lily's plan to run the KKK from Spivey's Grove.
Friend of Henry, reluctant clan member who serves as an informant to the black people of Spivey's Grove
Assisting Noah in getting guns to all the colored citizens of the Florence and surrounding counties because the Sears and Roebuck catalog charges $200.
Subplot: Mrs. Barden
Hires Lily to work for her after Big Sister Nostalgia leaves Spivey's Grove.
Turns a blind eye to Lily and Henry Whit continuing to see each other
Husband is the DA, who does agree to help Lily when she finds enough evidence against Noah to put him in jail
Helps Lily purchase a Wells Fargo safe to keep all the money she finds in Noah's house
