Impacts of Deforestation
Climate Change - The trees breath in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. If there are fewer trees then less carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere. This then results in deforestation leading to global warming.
Soil Erosion - Once land is cleared the soil is left without shelter. When it rains the nutrients in the soil are washed away. The
nutrient cycle stops because there are no falling leaves to replace the nutrients in the soil. This means the soil is no longer able to get plant life because it is not good enough. This means the soil is easily eroded.
Development - The money created from deforestation allows a country like Brazil to generate income. The can then be used to pay off debts.
Biodiversity - Many different species of plants and animals die because of deforestation. As plants and animals are connected in the food chain. Deforestation reduces the biodiversity found in the tropical rainforest.
Causes of Deforestation
-
Farming - Large areas are cleared for farming. Because the demand for meat has increased, cattle farms have opened for beef farming. Crop farming is also responsible for the loss of tropical rainforest as many farmers are clearing land to grow soya beans for wealth.
Logging - Tropical rainforests are cut down so that trees like mahogany are accesible. Other trees are cut down for making paper and furniture
